Passing Pattern + Ball Mastery (20 mins)

Objective:

  • Introduce correct first touch behaviour.
  • Ball mastery practice.

How it works:

  • Players go through passing practice, then join the next cone.
  • Last player in passing practice dribble to ball mastery section, perform ball mastery moves and finish in goal.
  • Join the back of queue and repeat.
  • Passing patterns:
    • 1. Receive back foot in step + punch with front foot (preferred method).
    • 2. Receive back foot inside step + punch with front foot.
    • 3. Receive facing back + turn + pass.
    • 4. Face backwards + set back + open up + pass.
  • Ball mastery:
    • Iniesta.
    • Step over.
    • Body feint + outside take.

Progression:

  • 2 lines race each other (up).
  • Set time limit (up).


Coaching Points:

Pasing practice:

  • Strive for perfection in habits.
  • Check out cue = when previous pass in train.
  • Check out opposite direction of ball travel.
  • Keep ball on ground, good ball speed.

Passing patterns:

  • 1. Check out, body sideways for maximum vision, shoulder scan, receive back foot and set up next football action, front foot inside foot pass, lock ankle, put weight in pass, follow through in step.
  • 2. Check out, body sideways for maximum vision, shoulder scan, receive back foot with inside foot back to direction of pass, front foot inside foot pass, lock ankle, put weight in pass, follow through in step. 
  • 3. Run towards passer back to cone, shoulder scan, body feint, inside or outside take the other way, inside foot pass, lock ankle, put weight in pass, follow through in step.
  • 4. Run towards passer back to cone, do a one-two with passer, after first pass, check out, body sideways for maximum vision, shoulder scan, receive back foot and set up next football action, front foot inside foot pass, lock ankle, put weight in pass, follow through in step.

Ball mastery:
  • Small touches for control, use both foot, ball between both foot, knees bent, eye up.

End Zone Game (20 mins)

Objective:

  • Create space for the next football action.
  • Quality killer pass into end zone.

How it works:

  • 3v3 small sided game. 
  • Players can only score with a one touch finish inside the shooting zone. Only 1 attacking player allowed in shooting zone. No defenders allowed in.
  • Restarts from goal kick.

Progression:

  • 2 touch rule (up).
  • Passive marking only (down).
  • Make pitch smaller (up).
  • Counter attack and score within 8 seconds = 2 points (up).


Coaching points:


1st attacker:

  • Drive into space.
  • Be confident to take opponents on to create space for next football action.
  • 1v1 attacking skill:
    • Small touch approach.
    • Confident use of technique.
    • Change direction and speed. 
  • Killer pass:
    • Spot runs, communicate runs.
    • Weight behind pass, hit between or behind defenders in front of runner.
    • Striking technique - side of foot, lock ankle, hit centre of ball, keep ball on floor, hip over ball and follow through with strike.

2nd & 3rd attackers:

  • Start level and outside of defenders.
  • Prioritise give angle in front of dribbler, but support level or beneath ball if needed.
  • Movement to provide passing angles.
  • Check out, prioritise back foot receive and drive or pass forward.
  • Decide where to place ball (next football action) depending on defender position.
  • Penetrating runs:
    • Spot space between or behind defenders.
    • Double action to get rid of defenders. 
    • Run behind or peel in front on defender depending on their position.
    • Communicate with voice and hand.
    • Focus on first touch finish with inside foot.

Thinking Game (20 mins)

Objective:

Practice timing of runs.

How it works:

  • 2v1 thinking game.
  • 5 passes within a zone then progress into another zone.
  • 1 point for crossing zones.
  • Defender with ball tags the attacker with ball.
  • Swap roles if tagged or lost possession out of bound.


Progression:

  • Increase number of passes to score (up). 
  • Reduce number of passes (down).
  • Remove ball from defender (up).
  • Extra defender (up). 
  • Smaller area (up).

Coaching Points:


1st attacker:

  • Identify space and teammate.
  • Attract pressure, pass the ball away once defender attracted, remain composed.
  • 1v1 moves to exit pressure if needed.
  • Correct weight of pass in front of runner to progress into the next zone.
  • 2nd attacker:
  • Stay mobile and always provide passing lane.
  • First touch into space to set up next football action.
  • Time runs into the next zone, hand and voice communication.

    Non Directional Practice (20 mins)

    Objective:

    • Work on support and mobility to penetrate zones. 

    How it works:

    • 4 scoring zones within a diamond. 3v3, add jokers to help possession team numbers depending.
    • 1 point = if the team gets the ball to any of the 4 zones. Team with highest points wins. 

    Progression:
    • 2 touch passing (up).
    • Passive marking (down).
    • Smaller area (up).
